Why did the BNP do well at recent local and European elections? (From the recently published YouGov study into voting habits)

BNP voters tend to be totally turned off by politics and think that politicians are corrupt, for example 81% think their MP is corrupt compared to 48% of Labour voters. They have very specific reasons to vote BNP, which tends to be focused solely on immigration. BNP tend to take votes from skilled manual labour jobs. eg Plumbers & Electricians, which leans itself neatly to previous statement as immigration tends to be of semi-skilled and skilled people seeking more pay for their skills. BNP voters tend to usually vote Labour but would consider themselves more “right wing”, and appreciate the “self made working man”.

This demographic tends to be the hardest to convert but their likelihood to participate in the political system is the lowest, however if pushed they will come out. Therefore one must question the whole ideology behind the “Stop the BNP” campaigns as it appears to be these campaigns that actually motivate BNP voters to come out.

Legal Bit: All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 32,268 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 29th May -4th June 2009. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).

This isn’t for any malious reason other than the fact that I’ve always wanted to be as community focused as possible.

For the elections in 2010 I will be standing in the Tulketh ward with the Liberal Democrats and now is the time that I begin to put together what I think my design of the ward for the subsequent 3 years.

I’m always open to suggestion and discussion on this matter. I’m planning on having a monthly “plan for the future”/”manifesto”. Personally I’m not big on political jargon and want to be as transparent in my thought processes as possible.

So let the discussion begin.

I’ve posted the following on Facebook groups to stimulate conversation on the idea to make a video on Preston Bus station that is set to be demolished as part of the Tithebarn project here in the city of Preston. It would be good to maybe have two competiting videos, made by the collaborate effort of each of the two groups….. just a thought

How about we get a few people from Preston… a few budding film producers to do…. “life and times of Preston Bus station”.. focusing on

History
Socio-economic impact on St Johns and the Guild Hall
How Stagecoach buying Preston Bus will effect the usage of the bus station
How the Grosvenor group will benefit, including how much of towns and cities around the country have influence on planning decisions both nationally and locally
How the people of Preston will benefit. (or not .. depending on your opinion)

I think there would definitely be some media interest in this and raise the profile of the bus station across the whole of Lancashire. Maybe even get you on NorthWest tonight, chance for any reporters to shine!
Thoughts?
(This is being posted in both the PRO and AGAINST groups)

When a population marches to bring attention to a political cause they must understand the environment in which they are operating. I’m talking about the recent march against the war in Palestine, well I say a war, what I mean is ethnic cleasing and deep rooted hatred between two peoples.

However this blog is not about the injustices in the Middle East but that march here in Preston.

Basically the march consisted of 2000 ….. oh.. its just easier to say British Asians. Bar one…. Michael Lavalette. For me this march failed as it failed to bring in people from a wider demographic background, and therefore one must obviously ask onesself “Was it worth it”.

Local activism has it’s place. And obviously my background in running for council has taught me that local activism WORKS but local activism on national and international matters does not.

To make a difference one must motivate the powers that be to act, at a level that is consistant with the action being at a level you want. Ie…. international stuff… at least at national level
